CHARLOTTE HARDY
“My work is driven by my imagination and love of pattern and nature. Decorative ceramics are set up in the studio with seasonal flowers and produce and a whimsical narrative starts to unfold in a playful and illustrative manner.
Inspiration comes from gardens, the seasons, Folk and Outsider Art, textiles, and being in nature.
Bright colours are laid down first as under layers to add depth and luminosity and then I start to draw with paint, working with energy and expression. I’m always aiming for the composition to have a sense of space and stillness, contrasting with the abundant character of the subject matter. Still life objects become a celebration of rich decoration.”
Charlotte Hardy graduated with a first-class BA (Hons) in Printed Textile Design from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1999. Paintings has been published on greeting cards, stationary, garments, book covers and in editorials. Her work is held in a museum collection and is collected across the world. She has worked with Anthropologie, Penguin Books, Waitrose Food Illustrated Magazine and Nina Campbell. Charlotte was the first artist in residence at The Affordable Art Fair and has run workshops at the Victoria and Albert Museum. ARTIST INTERVIEW SERIES
Charlotte Hardy
We’re thrilled to introduce Charlotte Hardy as part of our artist interview series and in support of our current exhibition A Love Letter To Summer, featuring our first collection of Charlotte’s whimsical work!
Driven by imagination and her love of and pattern, Charlotte builds observational still life compositions from layers of colour. Inspired by the natural world, garden scenes and folk art, she is interested in resolving a balance between space and stillness, and abundance and energy.
Read our interview with Charlotte to learn more about her fascinating practise.
