KATE SAMPSON
Based in her garden studio in the woodlands of rural Kent, Kate Sampson’s work involves traditional ceramic forms combined with intricate and uplifting hand-painted decoration inspired by the native plants and wildlife that surround her.
Working predominantly in stoneware, her decorative technique involves layering fine brushwork with sgraffito and wax resist to produce a distinctive richness and depth.
Themes centre on a joyous appreciation of the natural world and reflect her love of ancient folk art and historical craft with warm earthy palettes, antique florals, wild animals, luscious fruits, and hidden insects consistently adorning her vessels.
A background in illustration greatly informs her practice, stimulating her to approach clay as though it were an artist’s canvas.
