ARTIST TALK - FIBRES OF BEING 26/09 AT 11AM
Join Caroline as we warmly introduce Fibres of Being, an engaging exhibition centred around a carefully curated group of artists whose practices are rooted in fibre and natural materials. This special event offers the chance to hear directly from some of the exhibiting artists, as they share insights into their creative processes and the personal inspirations and life experiences that shape their work.
For the first time, we are delighted to welcome fashion and tailoring into the gallery through a collaboration with St Ives–based artist Teagan Pharaoh Green. This exceptional collection draws significant inspiration from her deep interest in the restoration of Talland House in St Ives, reflecting both the craftsmanship and history behind the project. Alongside Teagan, we welcome local Heritage Horticulturalist gardener Polly Carter, who will share her work on the inspiring restoration of the garden at Talland House — the cherished childhood home of Virginia Woolf.
Polly shares her fascinating discoveries drawn from careful study of archival materials and Virginia Woolf’s own writings, revealing the garden’s rich history and heritage. She explains her thoughtful plans to restore the planting and reintroduce native species that once flourished there, breathing new life into this historic space. Meanwhile, we also have an insightful conversation with Teagan about her brand new collection of wearable art, featuring beautifully embroidered waistcoats with intricate hand-embellished details inspired by the revival work at Talland House. We’ll hear about her creative process and practice as a contemporary textiles and fashion designer.
We are also thrilled to present, for the first time, a collection of works by Penzance-based artist Elizabeth Loveday. Her practice draws from everyday life and reflects on themes of motherhood, dysphoria, and mental health. Each carefully made piece on paper, cloth, and panel invites a gentle, thoughtful conversation, unified by her distinctive and recognisable style.
Next, we welcome Ali Bassett, a multi-disciplinary artist living in Cornwall. Working on canvas, her pieces are stitched together in a patchwork of imagery, figuration, and pattern, allowing her to tell stories that remain deeply relatable.
“Folktales, morals and old wives’ tales, overheard stories and the proverbial wisdom of the superstition all influence my work. There’s a real beauty in stories handed down from generation to generation, words of advice as we make the same mistakes, repeat the same heartbreaks and share the same love and joy. The world around me always creeps into my work, a glimpse of the sea or the horizon, the fields, trees and streams all decorate my stories.” – Ali Bassett
