SOPHIE GLOVER

Sophie Glover (b.1992) lives and works in South-East London making oil paintings, drawings & jewellery. Her paintings use symbolic objects, resting in the domestic setting of the kitchen, to explore themes of rest, personal ritual and the occult. Her still lives are little tableaus of her thoughts; a way to formalise memory and solidify nostalgia. Each one is made from the last and repeating icons constantly reappear; women sleeping heavy as rocks, anaemic fruit and flowers, insects, butter blocks, phones glowing ominously, a self-portrait by my Grandmother. She uses ephemera on a table to describe the passage of time as you see flowers arrive and die, notes appear, bills, keys, drawings, cigarettes, food and forgotten glasses.

Her paintings have been sold into various private collections as well as being frequently commissioned. Sophie was awarded Arts Council England's Grants for the Arts and has been long-listed for the BP Portrait Award & Jackson’s Art Prize. She has undertaken several residencies as well as participating in multiple solo and group exhibitions across the UK, France and Sweden.
