KATE HENDERSON

Kate’s sculptural practice begins with direct carving in reclaimed, found, or donated materials, most often wood, in a process she describes as a ‘conversation’.

Inspired by what she terms “design by nature”—driftwood, sea-worn pebbles, and forms gradually shaped by weather and use—her work explores biomorphic forms that emerge through process rather than predetermined design. She responds to each material’s character—grain, knots, marks, and irregularities—allowing these to guide the evolving form. These features inform the process, shaping the work without dictating it.

Forms are resolved slowly, with finishing focused not on perfection but on clarity of curves, lines, and smooth surfaces. Her practice reflects a deep respect for material, a love of simplicity, and a mindful engagement with the inherent characteristics of each material—working with what might be seen as imperfections as part of the process, whether they are retained, transformed, or removed.

At a deeper level, her practice is grounded in slowness and attentiveness. Making allows her to step out of busy thinking and into simple presence, where creation becomes an intuitive and meditative process outside of time. Whether carving or casting, she creates tactile objects that invite touch, stillness, and quiet attention—offering a contemplative counterpoint to a fast, perfection-driven world.
